Tradition, culture, and flavors that inspire memories of home are all very important to us. Home is where love and family reside. It is where we strive to be when we need to connect with oneself. A smell, a taste, a song can trigger such powerful, wonderful memories of family. In Italy, when we visit la famiglia everything tastes fresh and wonderful. The company is always fun and the sun seems brighter. The Matrons of the family have secret recipes that are never written down, but if you behave, maybe they will dictate it to you. It’s all by heart and with love. My husband, Enzo’s aunt, Zia Anna has a cozy property with a substantial amount of land by the beach. Every year there is an olive harvest to make the best olive oil. You can find Amarena Cherries to make jam for crostate. Oranges are used to make ciambellone and other cakes. But the fruit that caught my eye were the lemons. Enormous, uneven, pitted skin lemons with a very thick rind that had the best aroma around. These lemons are used to make pastry creams and squeezed over fresh seafood. But the most intriguing recipe I came across Zia Anna making was her Crema di Limoncello. I begged her for the recipe and after many years of listening to me plead, she finally granted my wishes. After many trials and some tweaking, I decided to make it unique to the Florida market by using Rum instead of alcohol to give it a smoother, more balanced taste. Playing around, and with Enzo’s guidance, I created a few more flavors which are so versatile that they can be used in baking, making unique cocktails, and drinking as is. As my moto says, the idea was conceived in Italy, born in the USA.
